How to Use

📖 About this tool

Trips abroad, cross-border store settlements, an invoice from an overseas supplier, a quote for a colleague in another country - all of these end up at the same place: you need to turn an amount in one currency into another. This tool reduces that to two moves. Type the amount, pick the two currencies, and let it do the arithmetic.

Rates come from a public exchange-rate service and cover more than thirty commonly used currencies, including the US dollar, euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Hong Kong dollar, New Taiwan dollar and Korean won. What you get back is a mid-market rate - the reference price used between banks, with no retail markup from a counter or a payment platform folded in. That makes it solid for estimating a cost or sanity-checking a bill. When you actually move money, the rate you are filled at comes from your bank or payment provider and will differ somewhat from what you see here.

✨ What it does

  • Fetches a fresh rate before each conversion and stamps the result with the time and source of that data, so you always know how current the number is
  • Covers thirty-plus currencies, including the dollar, euro, yen, pound, Hong Kong dollar, New Taiwan dollar, won and Singapore dollar
  • Swaps direction with one click on the middle button - source and target trade places and the quote flips with them
  • Shows a side-by-side panel: enter once and read the same amount expressed in several other major currencies at a glance instead of converting over and over
  • Keeps working when the network does not: if the request fails it falls back to a snapshot of rates stored in the tool and labels the result clearly as offline data
  • Does the arithmetic in your own browser. The amount you type is never uploaded or stored anywhere
  • Common pairs: eight frequently used combinations such as USD to CNY, EUR to CNY and JPY to CNY, one click each
  • Quick amounts: 100, 500, 1000 and 10000 fill the field in one tap instead of retyping
  • Full rate table: expand it to list every rate and its inverse against the current base currency, searchable by code or name; clicking a row makes it the target currency
  • Caching and refresh: the same base currency reuses a short-lived cache, and Refresh forces a fresh quote. Every result is stamped with its data time and source
  • Two-endpoint failover: if the primary rate service is unavailable the backup is tried automatically, and only if both fail does the tool fall back to its offline snapshot

🚀 How to use it

  1. Type the amount into the field. Whole numbers and decimals both work, up to two decimal places
  2. Choose the source currency on the left - the currency the money is in right now
  3. Choose the target currency on the right - the currency you want it expressed in
  4. Press Convert. After a short moment the result, the rate and the data timestamp appear
  5. To run it the other way, press the swap button in the middle. The two currencies change places and the quote inverts to match
  6. Expand the full rate table to see every currency at once, filter it by code or name, and click a row to set it as the target currency

⚠️ Things to keep in mind

  • It needs a network connection. Rates are pulled from a remote service, so the first conversion requires connectivity. If the request fails or times out, the tool switches to a built-in snapshot of rates and marks the answer as offline data. You still get a real number - never a blank result or a made-up one - but a snapshot is frozen at a fixed point in time and will drift from the live rate.
  • The service is rate limited. Public rate services cap how often one caller may ask. A cache is built in, so repeating the same base currency within a short window does not re-hit the service. If you do get a throttling response, wait half a minute and try again.
  • This is a mid-market rate, not a dealing rate. No bank spread, no handling fee, no conversion loss is included. Real exchanges, card purchases and incoming cross-border payments usually settle a little worse than the mid-market figure. For large amounts, price it with your institution.
  • Input is numbers only, up to two decimal places. Minus signs, letters, thousands separators and currency symbols are rejected up front with a message, and no request is wasted on input that cannot be valid.
  • Decimal places follow convention. Currencies like the yen, won and dong are normally quoted without decimals and are displayed that way. Very small rates are truncated to a readable length rather than printed as a long tail of meaningless digits.
