📖 Tool Introduction

The SQL Formatter is a free online SQL beautifier built for back-end engineers, data analysts and report development. The SQL you copy out of logs, monitoring dashboards or caches is often a single compressed line, with multi-table joins and nested WHERE conditions stacked on top of each other, making it almost impossible to read the table relationships and filtering logic at a glance. This tool uses a hand-written tokenizer that splits a statement into four kinds of tokens, namely words, punctuation, string literals and quoted identifiers, then re-lays the statement out: common keywords are uppercased automatically, and clauses such as SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, ORDER BY, HAVING, LIMIT, JOIN and ON break onto new, indented lines so the structure is obvious at a glance. Crucially, single-quoted strings and identifiers wrapped in double quotes, backticks or square brackets are kept whole, and their inner text is never uppercased or space-collapsed, so data values like status='Paid' and case-sensitive identifiers are never accidentally rewritten. Three indent styles are available, namely two spaces, four spaces and a tab, and keyword uppercasing can be toggled off. Everything runs locally in the browser; your statements are never uploaded, so it is safe to run queries that contain real business data through it. The built-in example is a realistic join with a where filter and an order by, so the difference between the compact input and the layered output is immediate, and the download button hands you a ready .sql file for version control or ticketing. Because the tokenizer first isolates literals before touching any whitespace, the formatter never accidentally flattens a date inside quotes or renames a column that was deliberately quoted with a mixed-case spelling. The output stays compact enough to paste straight into a pull request description, yet the clause breaks make the join order and the filter sequence readable at a glance. Turning the uppercase option off preserves the original casing entirely, which is convenient when you are mirroring an existing codebase convention. Whether you are reviewing a slow query, sharing a report with colleagues or preparing an example for documentation, the tool turns an intimidating one-liner into a statement you can actually reason about.

✨ Key Features

  • Uppercase keywords: SELECT, FROM, WHERE and friends, with a toggle
  • Clause breaks: major clauses break and indent for clear hierarchy
  • String safe: single-quoted strings and quoted identifiers stay verbatim
  • Indent options: 2 spaces, 4 spaces or a tab to match your team
  • Reusable output: copy in one click or download a .sql file
  • Fully local: your SQL never leaves the browser

📝 How to Use

  1. Paste the SQL you want to format into the left panel
  2. Pick an indent style and toggle uppercase keywords on or off
  3. Click Format or press Ctrl+Enter
  4. Inspect the beautified statement on the right and confirm string values are intact
  5. Copy the result or download a .sql file

⚠️ Notes

  • Value fidelity: text inside single quotes keeps its original case, so business data is untouched
  • Identifier safety: quoted table and column names are case sensitive and preserved as written
  • Common dialects: mainstream SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE are covered; complex stored-procedure syntax may be imperfect
  • No validation: the tool only beautifies and never checks SQL correctness
  • Performance: give very long nested statements a moment to finish
