Text to Binary Converter
How to Use
📖 Tool Introduction
The Text to Binary Converter is a free online visualisation tool that expands any piece of text into a long run of zeros and ones, byte by byte in UTF-8, and restores such a binary string back to readable text. It is a favourite in classrooms explaining character encoding, among first-year computer science students who want to see what data really looks like in memory, and among security enthusiasts hand-crafting bit patterns. It works strictly on the UTF-8 byte stream: every byte is zero-padded to exactly eight bits, so an uppercase A becomes 01000001, a space becomes 00100000, and a Chinese character expands into three groups of eight bits. You may choose whether to put a space between bytes so each 8-bit group stays easy to read. On decode the tool silently skips spaces, line breaks and anything that is not 0 or 1, but it raises a clear error when the remaining bit count is not a multiple of eight, instead of producing garbage. The round arrow button in the middle flips the direction between encoding and decoding, and the stacked layout above and below makes the whole flow very direct. A live strip under the output always reports the total bit count and the equivalent byte count, which is great for teaching and for sanity checks. Everything runs locally in the browser, so your text never leaves the machine. Because the expansion is purely mechanical, teachers can use it on a projector to demonstrate why ASCII is seven bits stored in eight, and students can check their homework by flipping a sentence back and forth a few times. Debuggers occasionally hand you a bit pattern that you need to visualise before you can reason about it, and this tool turns that wall of digits into something a human eye can actually parse one byte at a time. It stays fast even for longer paragraphs, and it never crashes on unusual symbols. The stacked layout means the encoded output and the decoded input never overlap, which makes checking your own work a matter of glancing up and down rather than scrolling through a long page.
✨ Key Features
- Byte by byte: every byte becomes exactly 8 bits, zero-padded
- UTF-8 accurate: CJK and emoji expand into their true bytes
- One-click flip: the middle arrow switches encode and decode
- Grouped spaces: optionally separate bytes with spaces
- Bit meter: live total bits and bytes displayed
- Fully local: computed in the browser, private
📝 How to Use
- Confirm whether you are encoding text to binary or decoding back
- Tick the byte-space option if you want grouped output
- Paste text or a 01 string into the input area
- Click the convert button
- Use the middle arrow to feed the result back as new input
⚠️ Notes
- Multiple of 8: the 0/1 count must divide evenly by eight
- Only 0 and 1: other chars are ignored; if nothing remains, it errors
- Byte order: bits follow UTF-8 byte order, no bit reversal
- Invalid UTF-8: non-text bytes fail decoding cleanly
- Length: one CJK character becomes 24 bits, long text gets very long
