📖 About This Tool

The Global University Directory is an offline lookup tool built on ROR, the Research Organization Registry, version 2.14. That release catalogues 144,717 research organisations worldwide, and this tool takes the education-classified subset of it, which comes to 30,977 institutions across 223 countries and regions. The set covers universities, colleges, institutes, specialist schools and academies rather than only bodies that carry the word university in their name.

The database ships with the page and loads in the browser the moment the plugin opens. There is no button to press and no network request to wait for, and because the search runs entirely inside the browser, nothing you type is sent anywhere. That is the whole design: a directory that answers immediately and keeps the query to itself.

Each record holds the institution name, its name in the local language, the country and city, the organisation type, the official website, the domain, the year it was established and whether it is still operating. Just over ninety six per cent of the records carry a website link. Search covers six fields, the name, the Chinese name, the local-language name, the country, the city and the domain, so a Chinese name, an English name, a local-language name or a domain all work. Typing several words narrows the result to records that contain all of them, and results can be narrowed further by country, by institution type and by which source the record came from.

Results come fifty to a page. Selecting any row opens a detail panel with the full record and a button that copies the domain to your clipboard, and the current filtered set can be exported as a CSV file when you need to keep it or hand it to someone else.

🚀 How to Use

1. Open the plugin and wait for the status bar to report that local data is ready
2. Type a school name, keyword or domain into the search box, in Chinese or English
3. Narrow the results by country, institution type and data source as needed
4. Browse the list and select any row to see the full record for that institution
5. Choose export CSV to download the current filtered set to your device

⚠️ Things to Know

• Coverage: this carries the openly licensed part of the ROR dataset that can be redistributed; it does not claim to hold every university on earth
• Fields: only basic fields are included, with no address, phone number, email, faculty list or description
• Types: the type comes from the ROR taxonomy and spans universities, colleges, institutes, schools and academies, so not every entry is a university in the usual sense
• Websites: websites and domains come from a public dataset, so confirm against the institution before contacting or linking to it
• Licensing: ROR data is CC0 1.0, GeoNames geographic data is CC BY 4.0, and sql.js is MIT licensed
