How to Use

📖 Tool Introduction

Audio Waveform is a completely free online audio visualizer. Once you drop a local audio file onto the page, the browser hands it to the Web Audio decoder and turns it into raw sample data, then slices the whole recording into segments at the peak density you choose, extracts the maximum amplitude of each segment, and draws a symmetric, mirrored waveform in red. The rising and falling bars intuitively show how loudness changes over time: you can see at a glance where the narration goes quiet, where the drums hit hard, and where a fade or edit cut happens. Beyond just looking, you can play the clip back directly; while playing, a red line travels along the waveform so you can match what you hear with what you see. Peak density comes in sparse, medium and fine tiers — sparse keeps long recordings smooth, while fine reveals detail in short clips. This tool suits voice-over editors locating cut points, podcast producers checking loudness distribution, music lovers comparing the dynamic range of different recordings, and teachers explaining sound waves in class. Every decoding and drawing step happens locally in the browser, so the audio bytes never leave your device. It is available in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and English and opens on both desktop and mobile browsers without any installation. The canvas itself is fully responsive: it redraws to fit the width of your window, and switching peak density instantly recomputes the plot without re-decoding the file, so experimenting with sparse, medium and fine tiers feels instant. Reading the waveform also teaches the ear something practical: long flat stretches mark quiet sections or pauses, sudden tall spikes reveal transients and loud moments, and an even band usually means steady music or speech. No file is uploaded, no account is needed, and nothing is stored between visits, which makes the tool safe for demos, confidential recordings and classroom use alike.

✨ Key Features

  • True decoding: raw samples through decodeAudioData, not a header guess
  • Mirrored peaks: per-segment max amplitude drawn symmetrically, loudness at a glance
  • Three densities: sparse, medium and fine, switching smoothly even on long audio
  • Synced playback: play right on the page while the red line follows the position
  • Full info: duration, sample rate, channel count and peak bin count shown
  • Private by design: decoding and drawing never touch the network, zero uploads

📝 How to Use

  1. Click the dashed area to choose an audio file, or drop it onto the page
  2. Wait for decoding; the red mirrored waveform is drawn automatically
  3. Switch among sparse, medium and fine in Peak density to redraw
  4. Click Play to listen and watch the red line move along the waveform
  5. Click Clear to load another audio file whenever you like

⚠️ Notes

  • Decoding support: opening a file depends on the browser decoder; some formats may fail
  • Waveform meaning: each bar shows the peak rather than an exact envelope, reflecting overall loudness trend
  • Playback permission: clicking Play is a user gesture that unlocks audio output in the browser
  • Large files: keep a single file under about 100MB; very long audio takes a few seconds to decode
  • Density choice: the fine tier adds drawing time on extremely long recordings
