Online Metronome
How to Use
📖 Tool Introduction
The Online Metronome is a completely free, ready-to-use browser tool designed for musicians, instrumentalists and anyone training their sense of rhythm. Instead of loading audio files, it synthesizes crisp clicks in real time with the Web Audio engine, so there is nothing to download, no network connection is required, and the timing stays accurate and stable with almost no latency. You can freely adjust the tempo from 30 to 260 beats per minute, which covers everything from slow technical drills to fast virtuoso passages. You can also choose the number of beats in each bar, including 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 and 8/8, and you can turn the accent on the first beat on or off. In the center of the interface sits a large circular dial showing the current tempo in big numerals, while a row of dots below lights up one by one on every beat; the accented beat is marked in a distinct orange, so even in a noisy room you can keep track of the pulse at a glance. Dragging the slider changes the tempo on the fly without stopping the click, which is ideal for practising slowly at first and gradually speeding up as confidence grows. Every calculation and every sound happens locally on your device, which means your privacy is fully protected and the tool keeps working even offline, and it runs smoothly on both desktop and mobile browsers. Because it uses standard Web Audio oscillators, the click timbre is clean and penetrating, easy to hear over your own playing, and the visual beat dots double as a silent practice aid when you need to train timing without making any noise at all, such as in a quiet library, a shared room, or during a silent warm-up before a lesson or performance.
✨ Key Features

- Multiple time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8 and 8/8 bars supported
- Accented downbeat: the first beat uses a higher pitch and an orange dot for a clear strong-weak feel
- Visual beat dots: the dial border and dots flash on each beat, great for silent practice
- Adjustable volume: a dedicated volume slider suits both headphones and speakers
- Fully local synthesis: Web Audio oscillators generate sound live, zero loading, zero uploads
📝 How to Use
- Drag the tempo slider to pick a BPM that fits your exercise
- Choose the beats per bar in the time signature dropdown
- Tick or untick the downbeat accent and adjust the volume as needed
- Press Start and follow the high accented beats and the lower weak beats
- Speed up gradually by dragging BPM while playing, then press Stop or Reset when done
⚠️ Notes
- First sound: browsers require a user gesture, so sound only starts after you press Start
- No sound: check your system and tab volume and confirm the correct output device is selected
- Practice tip: start slowly and raise the BPM step by step instead of rushing at full speed
- 6/8 counting: this tool counts six beats per bar, with the accent on beat one
- Background throttling: switching tabs may reduce timer precision, so keep this page visible
