Group Splitter & Name Draw
How to Use
📖 Tool Introduction
Group Splitter & Name Draw is a free online utility built for classrooms, team-building events, meetings and activity organisers, designed to solve two everyday but tedious tasks: fairly dividing a group of people into several teams, and randomly deciding the order in which people should speak or perform. You simply paste your roster one name per line, choose how many teams you want, and click once to receive a balanced set of groups. Switch to the draw-order mode and everyone is shuffled into a random ranking, which is ideal for lucky draws, speaking turns or competition lanes whenever impartiality matters. The tool relies on the classic Fisher-Yates shuffle, so every outcome is genuinely random and unpredictable, removing the favouritism and order bias that creep in when people split teams by hand. Everything runs locally inside your browser, so your roster is never uploaded to any server, which keeps real names of colleagues, students and clients private. The interface is available in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and English, works on both desktop and mobile, and requires neither registration nor installation. Whether you are a teacher dividing a class, a coordinator organising a workshop, or a host running a raffle, this small tool removes the awkwardness of manual grouping in seconds, and the one-click copy and download workflow lets you push the final list into a group chat or print it out without extra steps. Because the grouping is driven by an unbiased shuffle rather than by whoever volunteers first, everyone on the roster is treated fairly, and reshuffling takes only a single click whenever the drawn result does not feel right for the occasion. The tool handles messy pasted lists gracefully too, trimming stray spaces and ignoring blank lines so you can drop in names straight from any source.
✨ Key Features
- Paste a line-by-line roster: one name per line, with blank lines and stray spaces trimmed automatically
- Even random groups: set any number of teams, and round-robin assignment keeps sizes balanced
- Draw-order mode: shuffles everyone into a random ranking for raffles or turn order
- Fisher-Yates shuffle: a proven algorithm that produces truly random, unbiased results
- Card-based layout: each team is a card with its name and headcount at a glance
- One-click copy and download: the grouped text can be copied or saved as a file for notices
📝 How to Use
- Paste or type the participant names, one per line, into the text box
- Choose either Even random groups or Shuffled draw order from the mode dropdown
- If you picked group mode, enter the target number of teams
- Click Split Now to reveal the group cards or the shuffled ranking
- Click Reshuffle for a fresh result, then copy or download the text when you are happy
⚠️ Notes
- Minimum size: at least two people are needed to split; fewer triggers a friendly hint
- Team cap: if you ask for more teams than people, it gracefully falls back to one person per team
- Blank lines: empty or whitespace-only lines are ignored and never take a slot
- Fully local: all work happens in your browser and no roster data leaves the device
- Random outcomes: every shuffle differs, so save the text if you need to reproduce it
