📖 Tool Introduction

The Stroop Test is one of psychology's most famous attention experiments: a colour word appears on screen, for instance the word red printed in green ink, and your brain cannot help reading the meaning first before dragging attention back to the actual ink colour. That internal tug-of-war is the Stroop effect. This tool brings the experiment into the browser: each round randomly serves twenty trials, each showing a colour word whose ink colour is deliberately mismatched with its meaning, and your job is to ignore the meaning and tap the button matching the ink as fast as you can. Every trial records your reaction time in milliseconds and whether you were right or wrong, and after the twentieth trial you receive a summary with average reaction time, accuracy, fastest and slowest responses and an overall rating. Everything runs locally, so no network is needed and no personal data leaves the page; it works both as a personal focus self-check and as a lively classroom demonstration of cognitive conflict. The effect is robust enough to measure: most people need noticeably longer to name the ink of a conflicting colour word than a neutral one, and the size of that gap is itself a rough index of attention control. Because the tool randomises both the word and the ink and forbids them from matching, you cannot preload a motor habit, so each run behaves like a fresh sample of your current focus state rather than a test you have practiced into easy answers. Recording the numbers over several days gives you a baseline that morning tiredness, distractions or coffee breaks shift in ways that subjective feeling alone never quite captures. Run the test in a quiet moment, since every interruption adds a false slow trial and distorts the average you are trying to learn from.

✨ Key Features

  • Standard 20-trial rounds where word meaning and ink colour always clash on purpose
  • Per-trial timing: milliseconds from appearance to your tap are recorded
  • Live HUD showing trial number, accuracy and the last reaction time
  • Final report with average RT, accuracy, fastest and slowest trials and a rating
  • Copy or export your score to track day-to-day focus changes
  • Fully offline: random trials and timing happen locally with no network request

📝 How to Use

  1. Tap Start and focus on the screen
  2. When a colour word appears, tap the button matching the ink colour, not the meaning
  3. Faster is better, but accuracy matters; wrong answers flash a shake
  4. After twenty trials read your average RT, accuracy and rating
  5. Run again to retest, and copy or export the score to follow your progress

⚠️ Notes

  • Rule: always answer by ink colour; answering by meaning counts as wrong and slows the score
  • Reading the score: shorter average RT is better; accuracy below 90% means you rushed
  • Display differences: screen colour casts can affect judgement, so test in bright light
  • Fully local: results live only on the current page and are cleared on refresh
  • Timing tip: rest before each run, since fatigue noticeably lengthens reaction times
