Indent Adjuster
How to Use
📖 Tool Introduction
Indent Adjuster is a batch line-indentation tool built for writers, typesetting and code-cleanup workflows. When you paste paragraphs copied from elsewhere into an editor, you often want every line nudged a few characters to the right so that block quotes, code snippets or dialogue read as a visually layered passage; conversely, when a passage has accumulated too much leading whitespace, you may want to pull everything back flush to the left and restore a tight layout. This tool exposes both directions as a single switch. In increase mode it prepends a chosen number of spaces or tabs to every non-empty line; in decrease mode it strips up to that same number of leading whitespace characters without ever touching the text inside the line. The indentation width is freely settable between zero and twelve characters, and you may choose spaces or tabs as the indentation unit to match a particular editor or house style. Two thoughtful extras are included: skip blank lines so empty rows are not needlessly indented, and an optional extra first-line indent that matches the Chinese typesetting habit of emphasizing the opening line while keeping the rest flush. While processing, the tool detects whether the source uses CRLF or LF and keeps that style in the output, so a Windows document never silently gets converted into a Unix one just because you reformatted it. Every operation runs locally in the browser; the original input stays untouched, which means you can experiment with widths and directions as many times as you like before finally copying or downloading the result. Because the tool never mutates the source, you can flip between increase and decrease, widen or narrow the step, and watch each iteration in the output panel without losing anything, which makes it especially handy for normalizing pasted snippets that arrive with mixed or inconsistent leading whitespace. There is no upload, no login and no waiting, and the whole panel collapses gracefully into a single column on a narrow phone screen.
✨ Key Features
- Bidirectional indent: increase or decrease every line at the flip of a switch
- Adjustable width: from 0 to 12 characters, precise to a single unit
- Unit choice: indent with spaces or with tabs
- Skip blanks: empty lines are left alone to preserve paragraph rhythm
- First-line emphasis: optionally indent the opening line one extra level
- Ending preserved: detects and keeps the original CRLF or LF style
📝 How to Use
- Enter the indent width in the side panel and pick spaces or tabs
- Choose the direction: increase indent or decrease indent
- Tick skip-blank-lines and extra first-line indent as needed
- Paste the text to process into the original-text area
- Click Apply Indent, then inspect, copy or download the result
⚠️ Notes
- Deletion limit: each line loses at most the chosen number of leading spaces, shorter lines are trimmed to their actual length
- Width cap: the width is clamped to 0-12 to avoid over-indenting a document
- Blank handling: with skip on, blank lines stay as-is; off, they also get indented
- First-line scope: the extra indent applies only to the first non-empty line
- Safe input: output never touches the original, so you can retry with other settings freely
