Number Padding and Numbering
Everything runs in the browser; your text is never uploaded
How to Use
📖 Tool Introduction
Work through a numbered list in bulk: pad the numbers to a fixed width, add numbering, strip numbering that is already there, or right align the lines.
Padding is the request that comes up most, and the reason is sorting. Written as one, two, ten and sorted as text, ten comes before two, because the comparison stops at the first character and never notices the extra digit. Padded to a fixed width the same three values sort in the right order, which is why file systems, databases and every batch of sequentially named files use it. It is a small thing that quietly decides whether the ordering you see is the ordering you meant.
The padding mode scans all the lines first to find the longest number, then brings every other line up to that width. Taking the width from the data rather than asking for it means the result is aligned regardless of how uneven the input was, and it never truncates a value that was already longer.
Adding numbering picks the width from the total: one digit below ten entries, two from ten upward, and so on, so the new numbering is aligned by construction rather than needing a second pass.
Stripping numbering handles the reverse case, where a list copied from somewhere else arrives with its numbers attached and only the content is wanted. The common forms are recognised: a number followed by a full stop, by the ideographic comma, by a closing parenthesis, or wrapped in parentheses. Everything runs in the browser, so nothing is uploaded.
A note on where the padded form matters most, which is any place values are compared as text rather than as numbers. File names, database codes, batch identifiers and anything exported to a spreadsheet are compared as text, and it is there that the ordering goes wrong. Inside a program, where the values are held as numbers, none of this applies and padding is purely presentational, so the two cases should not be confused.
✨ Key Features
- Zero padding to a common width taken from the longest number
- Adds numbering with the width chosen from the total
- Strips existing numbering in its common forms
- Right aligns lines against the longest one
- Line by line, one item per line
- Runs locally: nothing is uploaded
🚀 How to Use
- Paste the text on the left, one item per line
- Pick a mode on the right
- Press process, or use Ctrl plus Enter
- The result box shows the output with the line count and padding width
- Copy result puts it on your clipboard
⚠️ Things to Note
- Data source: Based on the usual conventions for numbered lists; conversion runs in the browser
- Width comes from the data: Padding takes the longest number present rather than a fixed value
- Lines without numbers stay as they are: In padding mode a line with no leading number passes through unchanged
- Alignment uses ordinary spaces: Right alignment pads with spaces, so it lines up under a monospace font
- Privacy: Everything runs in the browser. What you paste is never sent to a server
