    How to Use

    📖 Tool Introduction

The Cron Expression Builder is a free online tool made for backend engineers, DevOps practitioners and automation enthusiasts who are tired of memorising the five-field scheduling syntax by heart. Cron is the standard notation used on Unix-like systems to describe recurring jobs, and a single expression combines minute, hour, day-of-month, month and day-of-week into a compact string that looks simple yet is remarkably easy to get wrong. The asterisk wildcard, step values, hyphen ranges, comma-separated lists and the double meaning of Sunday as both zero and seven all trip up beginners who end up trial-and-erroring their way through a crontab file. This tool breaks every field into a friendly dropdown and a numeric input, so you only choose a mode and type a value while the resulting five-segment expression is assembled live in the header. Alongside the expression it renders a plain-language description of exactly when the schedule runs, and it goes a step further by computing the next five concrete moments at which the job would actually fire. Whether you are writing a Linux crontab, configuring a Jenkins periodic build, scheduling a GitLab CI pipeline or managing a Kubernetes CronJob, you can express, understand and verify the whole schedule in one place instead of discovering at deployment time that the job fires at the wrong hour. Everything is calculated locally inside your browser, with no network calls and no uploads, which makes the tool equally useful on locked-down machines and in fully offline environments. Because the next-run preview is computed from your device clock, it gives you an immediate sanity check before you paste the expression into your scheduler of choice.

    ✨ Key Features

    • Visual five-field setup: minute, hour, day, month and weekday configured independently, no syntax memorisation required
    • Four value modes: every unit, step */n, range a-b and list a,b, switchable per field
    • Readable description: the expression is translated into a clear sentence about when it runs
    • Next-run preview: the next five actual trigger moments are computed exactly
    • Sunday handling: the weekday field accepts both 0 and 7 for Sunday, matching common conventions
    • One-click copy and download: copy the expression or export it as a text file

    📝 How to Use

    1. Start with the minute field and choose a frequency mode: every, step, range or list
    2. Configure the hour, day, month and weekday fields in turn; the expression updates live
    3. Check the blue code block at the top to confirm the final five-segment expression
    4. Read the human description to make sure the schedule means what you intended
    5. Verify the next five run times, then copy the expression and put it to work

    ⚠️ Notes

    • Day and weekday combine as OR: when both are restricted, matching either one triggers the job, which is the POSIX standard and matters for cross-week schedules
    • Step must be positive: a step such as */5 means every fifth unit, and zero or negative steps are not valid
    • Range order: the lower bound should not exceed the upper bound; the tool swaps them automatically to stay legal
    • Timezone matters: the next-run preview uses your browser local time, so confirm the server timezone matches before deploying
    • Six-field variants: this produces the standard five-field expression; frameworks that require a seconds field need you to prepend one manually
