VIN Decoder
VIN Decoder
17-char check digit validation · year / plant / region decode
This tool only validates the VIN format and decodes public rules. It never connects to any vehicle database; results are for reference only.
How to Use
📖 Tool Introduction
VIN Decoder is a free local validator and decoder for the Vehicle Identification Number found on every production car. A VIN is the automotive equivalent of a fingerprint: 17 characters that encode the country of manufacture, the manufacturer, the model year and the assembly plant. The ninth character is the check digit, computed by an internationally agreed algorithm: letters and digits are mapped to numbers (A through H map to 1 through 8, I is skipped, O and Q are never used, and so on), then each of the 17 positions is multiplied by a weight of 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. The products are summed and taken modulo 11, with a remainder of 10 represented as X; the resulting character must equal the ninth character of the VIN. This tool implements that checksum entirely in your browser, rejects any VIN containing I, O or Q, and on success decodes the manufacturing region from the first character (L for China, J for Japan, W for Germany, and so on), the model year from the tenth character (A stands for 1980 and again for 2010, cycling through the decades), the assembly plant code at position 11, the WMI at positions 1 to 3, and the VDS and VIS segments. The interface shows all 17 characters as individual cells, colour-coding the check digit, the year digit and the plant digit so you can see the structure at a glance. It is useful when buying a used car, double-checking a registration document, or learning how VIN encoding works, and it never contacts a vehicle database, so everything runs offline and privately.
✨ Key Features
- Standard checksum: implements the character mapping and weight array with mod 11, mapping remainder 10 to X
- Illegal character check: automatically rejects VINs containing I, O or Q with a clear message
- Region decode: the first character is mapped to major car-producing countries and regions
- Year decode: the 10th character is reverse-looked-up to the 1980-2039 model year
- Per-character visual: all 17 cells update live, with check/year/plant positions colour-coded
- Fully offline: all validation and decoding happen in your browser, no vehicle database is contacted
📝 How to Use
- Type a 17-character VIN into the input (auto-uppercased, letters and digits only)
- The 17 cells below update in real time, with key positions highlighted in colour
- Click Decode VIN or press Enter to see the green or red status bar at the top
- Once the check passes, read the region, WMI, year and plant from the grid cards
- Click Copy result to save the decoded information to your clipboard
⚠️ Notes
- Valid does not mean real: a passing check digit only means the encoding rules are followed, not that the VIN belongs to a real car
- Coarse region: the first character maps to a region or country; exact manufacturer lookup needs a WMI database
- Year overlaps: the 10th character repeats every 30 years, so 1980 and 2010 share the same code; use common sense
- Plant code: the 11th character is defined by each manufacturer; the tool shows the raw character without mapping it
- Private by design: all decoding runs locally, no VIN is ever uploaded
