Text Truncator
How to Use
📖 Tool Introduction
The Text Truncator is a free online long-text shortening tool built for every situation where a long description must be squeezed into a fixed length: article summaries, product card copy, notification bar previews, the first screen of a tweet, database column limits and trimmed API payloads. Counting characters by hand to cut a passage down to size is slow and hard to judge, so this tool lets you set the mode and length once and produce a clean, tidy short version automatically. Three truncation dimensions are offered: by character suits CJK text and fixed-width fields; by word splits on whitespace, which is ideal for English summaries that should never cut a word in half; by line keeps the first N lines, perfect for log snippets and code excerpts. After cutting, an ellipsis is appended at the end by default, or you can type your own ending marker such as Read more. When smart boundary truncation is enabled, the tool rolls back to the nearest space near the cut point so that an English word is never split down the middle. The progress bar and percentage in the middle show in real time how much of the original text remains and how many characters were removed. All computation happens locally in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. A built-in example loads a realistic paragraph in one click, and the Ctrl+Enter shortcut runs the current settings without reaching for the mouse. Because everything stays on the device, the tool is safe for private notes and internal drafts, and it stays instant even with very long source text. Content writers preparing SEO meta descriptions, app developers fitting error messages into fixed-width UI boxes, and social media editors trimming posts to platform limits all benefit from the same predictable cut. The visual meter turns an abstract number into an obvious ratio, so you can immediately tell whether the result reads like a natural summary or a harsh mid-sentence chop.
✨ Key Features
- Three modes: characters, words or lines, covering Chinese and English alike
- Custom ending: ellipsis by default, replaceable with any marker you like
- Smart boundary: roll back to the last space so words are never split
- Length meter: progress bar and live percentage show the trim ratio
- No needless cuts: text shorter than the limit is returned unchanged
- Fully local: runs entirely in the browser, sensitive content never uploaded
📝 How to Use
- Pick by characters, by words or by lines from the mode dropdown
- Type the target length into the limit field
- Type an ellipsis or custom marker into the ending field, or leave it blank
- Paste the long text into the input area and click Truncate Now
- Check the meter ratio, then copy or download the result
⚠️ Notes
- Empty input: running truncation with no text shows a friendly prompt
- Positive length: the limit must be a positive integer of at least 1
- Word mode: splitting is on whitespace, so continuous CJK text is untouched
- Smart cut: boundary rollback may make the actual length slightly shorter
- Original kept: results go to the output panel so you can retune and retry
